Morning yoga classes in Ballyroan Community Centre: everything you need to know.

Updated December 2024. A small number of spaces free in every class to drop in during December. January’s classes are always full. Please book your January course early.

Morning classes run all year round in Ballyroan Community Centre. Evening classes are in The Park Community Centre, Ballycullen.

Ballyroan: €12 drop in. €40 to prepay your 4-week course.

Mondays 12 noon-1pm. Tuesdays 10.45-11.45am, Thursdays 9.30-10.30am.

Please bring your yoga mat, a small blanket for your comfort and warm comfortable layers you can move in.

Morning yoga classes are ongoing in Ballyroan Community Centre, Marian Road, Rathfarnham. The centre is a spotlessly clean, warm, bright, spacious place brilliantly run by South Dublin County Council; we are very lucky to have very supportive staff, the beautiful hall and a coffee area for your post-yoga cuppa. I suggest adding yourself to the mailing list for the centre to keep updated on courses and classes here. Please note the area has PAID PARKING. The ticket machine takes card or coins or use the app, your first half an hour is free, €1 per hour thereafter. Please bring a yoga mat (I have some to borrow) and a small folded blanket which you could use as a cushion to sit on or to throw over you for final relaxation.

Monday 12 noon, Tuesday 10.45-11.45am, Thursday 9.30-10.30am.

Drop in to any class: €12 per class please.

A four week course is €40. Drop-ins are €12. Courses run on an ongoing basis, you can join in any time. Sign up for two courses (two classes for four weeks, come to any eight classes) for €70.

Please enter through the main doors of the centre. The coffee shop is open for a cuppa after class.

You are welcome to join us for monthly Saturday morning 2-hour workshops, monthly mini-retreats and full moon meditations in Mutton Lane Yoga Studio. Outdoor Yoga in Marlay Park on Fridays in summer. Yoga retreats in Solar Alvura in Portugal. All upcoming events are listed and open for booking here.

What to expect in class: 

The physical yoga practice is balanced and healthy… strength, balance, posture, muscle tone, flexibility and range of motion. We explore breath-work, mindfulness, meditation and guided relaxation practices. All poses are adaptable for beginners. If you have any injuries or medical concerns please check with your doctor before practicing yoga. More about my style of teaching here

I will make some references to psychology, neuroscience and buddhism as I continue to share what I am exploring about the human mind and body as a Master of Science in MBI, Mindfulness Based Interventions. .

Our yoga courses will run in 4-week blocks with the last week of each course focused on an aspect of restorative yoga… Yoga Nidra, Yin or Guided Body Scans. I will ask you to please confirm and pre-pay your next course on the final week of each course please. 

I will always work with you if you are traveling and need to do part-of a course. I do appreciate you letting me know if you can’t make a class but I know life is busy and last minute things crop up. 

Monthly workshops, two hours long, will run to allow you to go a little deeper into your practice. At the moment these are happening in Mutton Lane Yoga Studio. Monday night’s course is almost fully booked: please enquire. Monday start time 7.45pm.

Thursday’s class has spaces. Thursday start time 6.45pm.

Classes are mixed-ability, inclusive and welcoming.

Mondays 7.45-8.45pm. Thursdays 6.45-7.45pm. Courses are ongoing. Please bring a yoga mat, a small folded blanket (for your comfort) and warm layers for relaxation.

A four week course is €35. Drop-ins, when available, are €10 (Two course for four weeks (8 classes) €60.)

Newcomers are most welcome, please check with me as sometimes we have a very limited number of spaces. I suggest adding yourself to the mailing list for the centre to keep updated on courses and classes here.

We sometimes break for the school’s breaks, voting days and bank holidays, please check. Courses run on an ongoing basis, you are welcome to join us any time.

December events and plans and dreams for 2025

Dear Yoga Friends, 

This is my Christmas letter to you. I touch on concepts you all know well from our classes, tell you a little bit about what’s coming up, and share my musings, hopes and dreams with you.

“The quality of our presence may speak more than anything else.”

We often practice silence together on our retreats and immersions and when I read this quote it can be quite meaningful for people. We consider how often we all speak, for whatever reason, and how interesting it is to be in silence together to explore that pattern. Another common theme in retreats is a snippet of yoga philosophy around the concept of Vivika or keen discernment, otherwise known as choosing wisely. 

We can all get caught up in the whirlwind that is preparing for Christmas. It’s so compelling, it’s fun, we can express our love to loved ones, we can get caught up in worrying if we have done enough, given enough, bought enough. When really, the most important thing of is the quality of our presence, not the quality of our presents! 

Your loved ones want you as your most relaxed, happy self. You want you to show up as your relaxed, happy, self… just as you should be. You, above all, deserve peace, contentment and a happy Christmas full of love and joy. What could you do to approach the weeks ahead to feel calm, rested and happy? 

The present of nature. 

The power of nature to heal us, to soothe us, to invigorate us; I am eternally grateful for our beautiful part of the world. In getting intentional for where effort, energy, time and money go for me this year I have chosen to contribute to two local charities, one for nature and one for the community. Save the Hellfire is a community organization committed to preserving the nature of the Hellfire amid a proposed construction project that has been approved, but is temporarily stalled. Beautiful calendars featuring photographs from local photographers that love the area are on sale for €10 directly from me at yoga classes or online at www.savethehellfire.com plus postage. In January we will organize a mindful Hellfire Hike for the community so please stay tuned for that. 

The present of community. 

In our evening venue we share our space with team at Ballycullen Food Bank who do an incredible job of distributing food and items to those who need them in the area. They are a donation-based, volunteer organization at the grass roots of our wonderful community here. Here we are, in leafy south Dublin, one of the safest places to be in the world, and there are people in need right on our doorsteps. This year on behalf of Sylvia’s Yoga I will be making a donation to Donovan’s Butcher’s in Firhouse who will in turn supply fresh meat to the Ballycullen Food Bank. This contribution is a gesture from all of us and I thank you all for your ongoing support of my business. 

The present of loved ones. 

“When I am in the place in me where I am truly me, and you are in the place in you where you are truly you, there is one of us.”

This Christmas I am fortunate to have loved ones present in a safe, loving, secure home. It has not always been this way, so I am doubly-grateful and counting my blessings daily as I prepare, probably over-prepare, see paragraph four!

December is full of community classes, and events in my favourite mountain venue, cups of tea with friends and yogis, fun plans with loved ones, the odd night out or two that might end up with a bit of dancing. You can keep your Chanel bag wrapped up in a bow under the tree, thank you, I have more-than everything I could possibly need. My wish for you this Christmas is many moments of connection with other humans full of love and joy. 

The present of you. 

You, above all, deserve your love and attention. Where could you find space and time for constructive rest, meaningful rest, rest that sparks joy? Sometimes that rest in simply a nap, or an afternoon on the couch. Sometimes it’s a trip out to a treatment or yoga or fun with friends. It could be your book, your bath, your bestie. The qualities you look for is number one restful (a break from endless doing), number two helpful. A glass of wine might be restful, the whole bottle might not be helpful; the after-effects of one single glass might not be helpful. How can you be your own best friend this Christmas? How can you make wise decisions as a Christmas present to you, from you with love. 

Yoga classes will continue into the community, morning and evening, all the way up until Thursday 12th December. We have three final events in Mutton Lane Studio, two have spaces left. All of these events are on my website. Please just come along to classes, Mutton Lane events need to be booked in advance on Eventbrite. Gift vouchers and calendars will be available in classes. Vouchers can be made up for any value you wish, I can also email a gift voucher to you or directly to a loved one. Events for Spring 2025 are live on the website and Eventbrite, these were really popular gifts last year. Newcomers to yoga are always welcome at all Mutton Lane events. 

I have loads of exciting plans underway in 2025. A retreat in Ireland, a retreat in Sicily is in the pipelines (ssshh, tell only your best friends ;-)) a book launch with my colleague and dear friend Dr. Eva Orsmond, author of three bestsellers and publishing her best book yet. Eva and I intend continuing our conversations on the airwaves so stay tuned for all of that. My own book is starting next year and I’ll be leaning into all of my experiences with all of you as our collecting learning journey unfolds. I am so grateful to all of you who share your beautiful presence with me, your collective calm, loving joy is what we share together. 

I am here for any questions at all. Sending you love and joy and connection for the festive season ahead, and so much gratitude.

Mutton Lane Yoga Studio is a purpose-built studio with a stunning spacious deck. Completely separate from the houses sharing the property the studio has its own entrance, plenty of parking and a small seating area. If weather permits we start the yoga practice outdoors for standing yoga poses amongst the trees, then on to our mats in the cosy, well-ventilated studio.

Please bring: Your yoga mat. The code for the gate (in your Eventbrite booking confirmation). A warm coat you can move in for outdoor standing poses. Warm layers for inside the studio (a hoodie or sweatshirt, cosy socks, an eye pillow or scarf for over the eyes if you like darkness for relaxation).

Sylvia teaches mixed-level yoga classes suitable for all levels. Every class is infused with mindfulness and appreciation of the beautiful surroundings. Emphasis on strength, softening and stretching for the physical body. Breath-work and relaxation to quieten the mind. Our two hour workshops include yoga flow and the ultimate deep-guided relaxation, Yoga Nidra.

Sylvia is teaching regular weekly yoga classes in Community Centres in Rathfarnham and Firhouse. Monthly Saturday morning workshops are usually 10am-12noon, Full Moon Meditations are are 7-8pm. Full Moon Meditation in the Dublin Mountains 15th January

Join us for a monthly full moon meditation in Mutton Lane yoga studio in the Dublin Mountains, our own little haven in the mountains with a wood-burning stove glowing inside. 

Full Moon Meditation, 7-8pm.

If weather permits we’ll remain in coats and shoes to start the practice outdoors for standing poses amongst the trees. Then we make our way into the cosy studio to continue the practice on our yoga mats. The class will be varied to include movement, breath-awareness and periods of stillness. We’ll close with a deep guided relaxation.

Suitable for everyone including: 

-Beginners and those back to yoga after a break.

-Experienced yogis curious about the meditative aspect of yoga, often those moments can be rushed, or more fleeting, in a faster-paced class.

-Anyone experiencing stiffness or tightness in the body.

-Anyone curious about mindfulness and meditation.

-Those of us who associate yoga with exercise and getting stronger/thinner/fitter/better … explore non-striving.

-Anyone needing to develop the skill of simply taking a pause in the midst of life.

Please bring: A warm coat you can move in, plenty of warm layers, it can be cooler than you expect in the mountains.

The intention for the movement is to move mindfully to bring the attention to the body - we will flow through a full range of motion yoga practice so everyone gets a good stretch throughout the whole body and a feeling of vitality and connection. We will sit outside sipping our tea and coffee for a short education piece supported by handouts, discussion, and journaling. Please bring a pen and a notebook (I’ll have spares!) The latter part of the class includes mindfulness practices designed to be quieter and more relaxing so you leave feeling completely rejuvenated.

Full Moon Meditation in the Dublin Mountains 12th February

Join us for a monthly full moon meditation in Mutton Lane yoga studio in the Dublin Mountains, our own little haven in the mountains with a wood-burning stove glowing inside. 

Full Moon Meditation, 7-8pm.

If weather permits we’ll remain in coats and shoes to start the practice outdoors for standing poses amongst the trees. Then we make our way into the cosy studio to continue the practice on our yoga mats. The class will be varied to include movement, breath-awareness and periods of stillness. We’ll close with a deep guided relaxation.

Suitable for everyone including: 

-Beginners and those back to yoga after a break.

-Experienced yogis curious about the meditative aspect of yoga, often those moments can be rushed, or more fleeting, in a faster-paced class.

-Anyone experiencing stiffness or tightness in the body.

-Anyone curious about mindfulness and meditation.

-Those of us who associate yoga with exercise and getting stronger/thinner/fitter/better … explore non-striving.

-Anyone needing to develop the skill of simply taking a pause in the midst of life.

Restore and Flow: Online yoga, mindfulness and journaling.

Join us for a supportive online yoga class that combines the power of yoga and mindfulness with a light touch of guided journaling. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced yogi, this event is perfect for you. If you need a moment to stop, release and reset in life, so you can embody yourself from a place of calm awareness, this is the space for you.

We are online for this event so you can join us from your cosy home. Come in your PJ’s if you wish! We will start with grounding and breathwork. We will take the body through a good full-range-of-motion stretch, think of a big yawn for every muscle! A big release of tension and a good spacious stretch. Nothing too fast or sweaty but moments of strength, connection and inner awareness. Around the half-way mark we will pause for some contemplation, maybe with the aid of pen and paper if that’s helpful for you. We use a format for our guided journalling to assist with this curious, open approach.

We’ll close with some yin-style stretching closer to the floor and a long deep relaxation.

Please bring:

Your mat, two pillows, a blanket, something to cover the eyes, a do-not-disturb sign for your door! A pen and paper, either a notebook or some blank sheets. Something to sit on while you are writing and something to lean on while you are writing like a table or a book can be helpful. It’s fine to use table and chair for some of the workshop if it’s easier.

Marlay Park Outdoor Yoga Fridays 9.30-10.30am.

Marlay Park Outdoor Yoga Rain or Shine. Fridays 9.30-10.30am. Near the Iron Man, enter park, turn left. Last one on 13th September 2024 and will resume April/May 2025.

We meet on the lawn to the left of the main car park near the iron man. If it's dry bring your yoga mat. If it's raining bring a raincoat and sturdy shoes. Warm layers are essential, rain or shine, even if it looks lovely and sunny when you leave your house; Marlay can get a cold wind. In rain we do some yoga and posture awareness under the trees and head into the trees for a forest bathing immersive mindfulness walk.

Yoga is suitable for all levels. Please get your doctor’s blessing and only move in a way that feels appropriate for your body from moment to moment. You will be offered lots of choices, please choose what calms your nervous system and soak up the beautiful supportive environment.

Local evening yoga has spaces on Mondays at 6.45pm for the summer for drop-ins. Please enquire or just come along. €10.

Mondays 6.45-7.45pm. Courses are ongoing. Please bring a yoga mat, a small folded blanket (for your comfort) and warm layers for relaxation.

A four week course is €35. Drop-ins, when available, are €10 (Two course for four weeks (8 classes) €60.)

Please join us for monthly Saturday morning 2-hour workshops, summer mini-retreats and full moon meditations in Mutton Lane Yoga Studio. Outdoor Yoga in Marlay Park on Fridays from July. All upcoming events are listed and open for booking here.

Monthly workshops, two hours long, will run to allow you to go a little deeper into your practice. At the moment these are happening in Mutton Lane Yoga Studio. Full Moon Meditation in the Dublin Mountains 11th December

Join us for a monthly full moon meditation in Mutton Lane yoga studio in the Dublin Mountains, our own little haven in the mountains with a wood-burning stove glowing inside. 

Full Moon Meditation, 7-8pm.

If weather permits we’ll remain in coats and shoes to start the practice outdoors for standing poses amongst the trees. Then we make our way into the cosy studio to continue the practice on our yoga mats. The class will be varied to include movement, breath-awareness and periods of stillness. We’ll close with a deep guided relaxation.

Suitable for everyone including:

Join us in Mutton Lane for a half-day retreat for learning, immersion and practice. Similar to a yoga workshop, we will start with movement, hopefully on the sunny deck. The intention for the movement is to move mindfully to bring the attention to the body - we will flow through a full range of motion yoga practice so everyone gets a good stretch throughout the whole body and a feeling of vitality and connection. We will sit outside sipping our tea and coffee for a short education piece supported by handouts, discussion, and journaling. Please bring a pen and a notebook (I’ll have spares!) The latter part of the class includes mindfulness practices designed to be quieter and more relaxing so you leave feeling completely rejuvenated.

Tucked away in the Dublin Mountains, on a quiet lane behind wooden gates you will enter a little haven of nature, peace and tranquillity. Mutton Lane Yoga Studio is a purpose-built studio with a stunning spacious deck. The studio a wood-burning stove and a small outdoor, heated seating area. If weather permits we start the yoga practice outdoors for standing yoga poses amongst the trees, then on to our mats in the cosy studio.

Join us in Mutton Lane is a half-day retreat for learning, immersion and practice. Similar to a yoga workshop, we will start with movement, hopefully on the sunny deck. The intention for the movement is to move mindfully to bring the attention to the body - we will flow through a full range of motion yoga practice so everyone gets a good stretch throughout the whole body and a feeling of vitality and connection. We will sit outside sipping our tea and coffee for a short education piece supported by handouts, discussion, and journaling. Please bring a pen and a notebook (I’ll have spares!) The latter part of the class includes mindfulness practices designed to be quieter and more relaxing so you leave feeling completely rejuvenated.

Full Moon Meditation in the Dublin Mountains 18th September

Join us for a monthly full moon meditation in Mutton Lane yoga studio in the Dublin Mountains, our own little haven in the mountains with a wood-burning stove glowing inside. 

Full Moon Meditation, 7-8pm.

If weather permits we’ll remain in coats and shoes to start the practice outdoors for standing poses amongst the trees. Then we make our way into the cosy studio to continue the practice on our yoga mats. The class will be varied to include movement, breath-awareness and periods of stillness. We’ll close with a deep guided relaxation.

Suitable for everyone including: 

-Beginners and those back to yoga after a break.

-Experienced yogis curious about the meditative aspect of yoga, often those moments can be rushed, or more fleeting, in a faster-paced class.

-Anyone experiencing stiffness or tightness in the body.

-Anyone curious about mindfulness and meditation.

-Those of us who associate yoga with exercise and getting stronger/thinner/fitter/better … explore non-striving.

-Anyone needing to develop the skill of simply taking a pause in the midst of life.

Full Moon Meditation in the Dublin Mountains 19th July

Join us for a monthly full moon meditation in Mutton Lane yoga studio in the Dublin Mountains, our own little haven in the mountains with a wood-burning stove glowing inside.

Join us in Mutton Lane is a half-day retreat for learning, immersion and practice. Similar to a yoga workshop, we will start with movement, hopefully on the sunny deck. The intention for the movement is to move mindfully to bring the attention to the body - we will flow through a full range of motion yoga practice so everyone gets a good stretch throughout the whole body and a feeling of vitality and connection. We will sit outside sipping our tea and coffee for a short education piece supported by handouts, discussion, and journaling. Please bring a pen and a notebook (I’ll have spares!) The latter part of the class includes mindfulness practices designed to be quieter and more relaxing so you leave feeling completely rejuvenated.

Full Moon Meditation in the Dublin Mountains 26th April

Join us for a monthly full moon meditation in Mutton Lane yoga studio in the Dublin Mountains, our own little haven in the mountains with a wood-burning stove glowing inside. 

Full Moon Meditation, 7-8pm.

If weather permits we’ll remain in coats and shoes to start the practice outdoors for standing poses amongst the trees. Then we make our way into the cosy studio to continue the practice on our yoga mats. The class will be varied to include movement, breath-awareness and periods of stillness. We’ll close with a deep guided relaxation.

Suitable for everyone including: 

-Beginners and those back to yoga after a break.

-Experienced yogis curious about the meditative aspect of yoga, often those moments can be rushed, or more fleeting, in a faster-paced class.

-Anyone experiencing stiffness or tightness in the body.

-Anyone curious about mindfulness and meditation.

-Those of us who associate yoga with exercise and getting stronger/thinner/fitter/better … explore non-striving.

-Anyone needing to develop the skill of simply taking a pause in the midst of life.
