Yoga Foundations: what keep us stable and calm from moment to moment?

For December we look to the earth for our inspiration and intentions in practice. Yoga teaches us how to be stable and calm in the present so that we can be fully aware of what is happening in us and around us. We can ask ourselves: How am I walking? How do I open doors? How am I turning on the tap? Do I feel grateful for my food?

Each week in December we will look at a foundational aspect of our yoga poses with an up-close-and-personal curious, open mind. We do this to simply wake up awareness from a place of stability and allowing, noticing our experience unfolding from moment to moment.

In each class we’ll spend a little time noticing the contact points with one plane of the body and the earth. We’ll practice focusing attention and then expanding that attention out to include a noticing of the entire body and how it is reacting to our experience. From the perspective of good alignment and safe, healthy ways to strengthen the body and release tension from our muscles, these practices teach us techniques to improve our posture.

Live online classes are once a week on a Tuesday, 1-2pm. The practice is recorded and is yours to play for one week. I strongly encourage two, or even three, practices in the week, you can of course do part-of any class any time with the recording at your disposal. Sign up for all 4 classes by selecting a quantity of 3 here (4 classes €30) or select one to join us week to week.

These themes are mirrored in our community classes so you can easily switch from in-person classes to online classes if you need to stay at home for any reason. For those who attend classes in the community twice a week we take a slightly different route in class two to deepen your learning.

All classes are suitable for all levels, please have your Doctor’s blessing to do yoga if you have any injuries or limitations. If something doesn’t feel right, gently back up. Don’t try anything you haven’t already done under the instruction of a yoga teacher. If you are new to a pose or a sequence the advice is to observe before attempting. Above all else, exercise caution and mind yourself!

Mindfulness is thoughtfully woven into each physical practice, in fact we are really just using our lovely bodies as a laboratory for the mind! In grounding your body thoughtfully on the earth you are planting seeds to approach your whole life from a place of being grounded, calm and aware.

Week 1: Back body on the earth

Week 2: Feet on the earth

Week 3: Hands on the earth

Week 4: Whole body on the earth

December’s online classes begin on Tuesday 30th November and run for three week to Tuesday 14th December. Class no. 4 will be our first class back in January, Tuesday 11th.

Thanks so much to all my lovely yoga students from near and far who join us! Everyone is welcome any time.
